Our history
The Michigan Association of Vehicle Theft Investigators (MAVTI) is a registered 501c3 organization that was founded on January 1st, 2000.
Our members
MAVTI members are persons employed as duly authorized law enforcement officers on a full time basis by any federal, state, or municipal subdivision, agents of the National Insurance Crime Bureau, insurance representatives, vehicle manufacturers, or any other agency or organization which has a substantial interest in the prevention, detection, investigation, or prosecution of vehicle theft and its related crimes.
Our mission
To organize a statewide association of individuals committed to the detection, investigation, prosecution, and suppression of vehicle theft and its related crimes in Michigan communities; and to provide free in-state training to police officers and SIU investigators in all facets of vehicle theft including identification, investigation, and current theft trends.
2023-2025 Organizational accomplishments
As we end 2025 and the MAVTI organization steams forward with a new board of trustees effective 11/12/25, let us look back at the organizational accomplishments under the previous board of trustees lead by Director Terri Miller:
- Conducted 80 training events statewide, reaching more than 2,100 law enforcement officers, insurance SIU professionals, regulatory agents, and police academy recruits from over 400 agencies.
- Conducted the first-ever insurance SIU–exclusive training event, setting a precedent for specialized professional development.
- Revived and sustained multiple quarterly Anti-Car Theft (ACT) investigative meetings, fostering collaboration among law enforcement, insurance SIUs, state regulators, and vehicle manufacturers.
- Established an open communication network with the Michigan Automobile Dealers Association (MADA) to address dealer-related vehicle crimes identified during ACT meetings.
- Identified and resolved a security issue with the NHTSA vPIC website VIN decoder, working directly with NHTSA staff to implement an online correction.
- Launched online training registration via mavti.org, streamlining access and participation.
- Successfully renewed the MAVTI ATPA training grant for the 25th consecutive year, ensuring continued support for statewide training initiatives.
- Planned and successfully executed three MAVTI annual training conferences that were highly attended
